The _result workbook shows the clean Item, Qty, Price, Total table before entering the formula in D2.

Hands-on practice

Step 1: Select D2. Confirm the name box shows D2 and the formula bar is ready for input.

Step 2: Enter =B2*C2 in the formula bar and press Enter. D2 should calculate 15 from Qty 3 and Price 5.

Step 3: Fill the formula down through D4 and verify the totals are 15, 40, and 12. Change B2 to 4 once, confirm D2 becomes 20, then restore B2 to 3.

=B2*C2
Cell D2 is selected; the name box shows D2, the formula bar shows =B2*C2, and the result is 15.
After changing B2 from 3 to 4, D2 remains selected and recalculates to 20.
After restoring B2 to 3, D2 returns to 15; the name box still shows D2 and the formula remains =B2*C2.

Enter the formula in D2; then fill down through row 4.

Common mistakes and fixes

Correction: return to the exact cell or range named in the step, recheck the source data, and repeat the specified command; do not type the expected result manually.

Independent practice

Add one row with the same schema, repeat the action, verify the new row behaves correctly, then remove it to restore the sample.
