What you will build

Organize this practice sheet without changing its File, Folder, and Owner data. The Folder column gives three realistic destination categories—Finance, Ops, and Projects—so you can separate file organization from the data stored inside the spreadsheet.

HANDS-ON PRACTICE

Practice in your own copy

Make your own Google Sheets copy with the same data, formulas, formatting, filter and frozen header. The original remains unchanged.

Sign in to Google. If the original is not publicly shared, download the full workbook and import it into Google Sheets, or paste the example data into your own sheet.

The verified _result workbook shows the clean File, Folder, Owner source table before the organization action.

Hands-on practice

Step 1: Select A1:C4 and review the Folder column. Use Finance, Ops, and Projects as examples of stable purpose-based folders instead of creating a new folder for every edit or date.

A1:C4 is selected in the _result workbook so the Folder values Finance, Ops, and Projects can be reviewed before moving the file.

Step 2: Open File and point to Move. This is the visible Sheets command used to change the spreadsheet's Drive location.

The File menu is open in the _result workbook with the pointer directly on Move.

When the Move dialog opens, choose the intended Drive folder and confirm the move. If the file is already in the correct folder, cancel instead of moving it unnecessarily.

The Move dialog shows Path 01 - Foundations selected, its full Drive path, and the Move confirmation button ready.

Step 3: Keep one clearly named working copy for the lesson and avoid extra duplicates. After any move or rename, recheck A1:C4 and confirm File, Folder, and Owner still match the checkpoint.

After the move, A1:C4 still shows the same File, Folder, Owner data, and the Google Sheets confirmation states that the workbook moved from My Drive to Path 01 - Foundations.

Checkpoint for “Organize spreadsheets in Google Drive”: the File, Folder, Owner columns and sample records must still match this table after the lesson action.

Common mistakes and fixes

A Drive folder move changes where the spreadsheet is stored, not the cell values. Compare A1:C4 with the checkpoint after organizing the file.

Independent practice

On your own copy, choose one meaningful destination folder, move the file there with File > Move, verify A1:C4 is unchanged, then return the file to its original folder if this was only a practice move.

Key takeaways

  • ✓Use stable purpose- or project-based folders rather than one-off folders for every edit.
  • ✓Review the Folder column before deciding where a workbook belongs.
  • ✓Use File > Move to change the spreadsheet's Drive location.
  • ✓Keep one clearly named working copy instead of creating unnecessary duplicates.
  • ✓After organizing the file, verify A1:C4 still matches the checkpoint.
QUICK CHECK

Check your understanding

Answer four questions about the practice sheet.

1. Which visible command changes a spreadsheet's Drive location?
2. What is the best basis for the folder structure in this lesson?
3. What should happen to A1:C4 after moving the spreadsheet in Drive?
4. What should you do if you moved the workbook to the wrong folder?
