Hands-on practice

Step 1: Confirm A1:B4 contains Date and Daily sales with 2026-09-01 → 120, 2026-09-02 → 140, and 2026-09-03 → 160.

Initial A1:B4 table with Date and Daily sales before using the fill handle.

Step 2: Select A2:B3 so Sheets has two seed rows to infer both patterns. Move the pointer to the small blue fill handle at the bottom-right corner of the selection.

Range A2:B3 selected with the pointer positioned at the fill handle in the selection corner.

Step 3: Drag the fill handle down through row 6. Verify the dates extend to 2026-09-04 and 2026-09-05 while sales extend to 180 and 200.

Autofill result through row 6: dates extend to 2026-09-05 and Daily sales to 200.

Step 4: Press Ctrl+Z once to Undo the autofill and confirm the table returns to A1:B4 with only the original three data rows.

After Ctrl+Z, the sheet is restored to the original three data rows with A2:B3 selected.

Checkpoint for “Use fill handle and autofill”: the Date, Daily sales columns and sample records must still match this table after the lesson action.

Common mistakes and fixes

Correction: return to the exact range and command named in the steps, then compare the live sheet with the Date, Daily sales source fields.

Independent practice

Add one row with the same schema, repeat the action, verify the new row behaves correctly, then remove it to restore the sample.

Key takeaways

  • ✓Use two seed values when you want Sheets to infer a series.
  • ✓Select A2:B3 before dragging.
  • ✓Drag from the small fill handle at the selection corner.
  • ✓Verify both the date and sales patterns continue correctly.
  • ✓Undo once to restore the original A1:B4 sample.
QUICK CHECK
