HANDS-ON PRACTICE

Practice in your own copy

Make your own Google Sheets copy with the same data, formulas, formatting, filter and frozen header. The original remains unchanged.

Sign in to Google. If the original is not publicly shared, download the full workbook and import it into Google Sheets, or paste the example data into your own sheet.

The _result workbook shows the complete Order, Region, Amount source table and all three sample rows.

Hands-on practice

Step 1: Prepare a CSV with the exact headers Order, Region, Amount and the three sample rows.

Step 2: Use File > Import > Upload, choose the CSV, and import it into a new sheet so existing content is not overwritten.

The File menu is open with the pointer directly on the Import command.
The Import file dialog shows the CSV, Import location = Insert new sheet(s), Separator type = Detect automatically, and the Import data button.

Step 3: Verify each field lands in its own column and Amount remains numeric rather than text.

Imported CSV result in a new sheet: Order, Region, Amount are in separate columns and Amount remains numeric.

Checkpoint

OrderRegionAmount
O-01North120
O-02South240
O-03North180

For formula lessons, result cells must be calculated rather than typed manually.

Common mistakes and fixes

Correction: return to the exact range and command named in the steps, then compare the live sheet with the Order, Region, Amount source fields.

Independent practice

Add one row with the same schema, repeat the action, verify the new row behaves correctly, then remove it to restore the sample.

Key takeaways

QUICK CHECK

Check your understanding

Answer four questions about the practice sheet.

1. What is the correct first action in “Import CSV files”?
2. Which follow-up action belongs to “Import CSV files”?
3. What should you verify before “Import CSV files” is complete?
4. Which correction is appropriate if “Import CSV files” behaves unexpectedly?
